This was Superintendent Annie Azarloza’s first School Committee meeting since officially beginning in the role. Committee members welcomed her and looked ahead to priorities for the coming school year.

The committee discussed plans for a community engagement roundtable tentatively scheduled for October. Rather than a traditional presentation, the event is intended to create small-group conversations where families can share experiences and ideas. Members also discussed ways to make the event more accessible, including childcare, dinner, transportation assistance, and interpretation services.

The committee discussed a proposal to reorganize space at Northampton High School involving Northampton Open Media (NOM) and the City’s Information Technology Services Department. District leaders said the plan would allow IT staff to work closer to the district’s largest school, return space currently used for IT storage to the high school for instructional and operational use, and shift day-to-day Chromebook management from library staff to IT professionals, allowing librarians to spend more time supporting students. Representatives from both the City and Northampton Open Media said they support the proposal.

The committee approved a new job description for a Director of Teaching & Learning, replacing the former Director of Curriculum & Instruction position. Administrators said the revised title better reflects the role’s broader responsibilities, including curriculum, assessment, professional development, and district-wide instructional leadership. During discussion, committee members noted that the updated qualifications would require prior principal experience, which could make current teachers or other educators without principal experience ineligible. Superintendent Azarloza said she intentionally added that requirement because she believes experience as a principal is important for someone who will be supporting school leaders across the district.

The committee unanimously approved NEST (Northampton Extended Support Team) as the new name for the district’s after-school program. Members said the new branding better reflects the program while creating a clearer district identity.

The committee reviewed a proposed one-year agreement with the YMCA related to after-school programming. Members discussed several questions and possible revisions but did not take final action. The agreement will return at a future meeting.
𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃
The committee discussed plans for its August governance retreat. The retreat will focus on how the School Committee works together as a governing body, including communication, collaboration, and decision-making. Several members supported that approach, while others questioned the planning process and asked that unfinished governance topics from the previous retreat (such as committee procedures and agenda-setting) also be addressed.
